assessment and reflection

‘Assessment is the process of identify, gathering and interpreting information about students learning’ (NSW DET, n.d). Planning for assessment will allow teachers to incorporate the ability to plan for learning using a range of formal, informal or self-reflection assessments (NSWIT, 2005). Assessment for learning should occur as a regular part of teaching and learning and this information should be gained from assessment activities to further develops students’ knowledge and ability to learn (NSW DET, n.d).

A collection of information from a variety of sources will indicate good assessment. This will provide a broader perspective on the student’s performance which should give a clearer indication on difficulties that may occur. As a new teacher it is important to know your students interests and prior knowledge to engage the students in the task. Therefore this will encourage learning to be significant and meaningful. If students understand what is being taught and why it is significant they will understand the usefulness of the task (NSW DET, 2003). Teachers should reflect on their teaching practice and allow for discussions or feedback to further improve life long learning skills (NSW DET, 2003). Teachers who are reflective educators will be able to take note of their teaching practice and reconstruct ‘events, emotions and accomplishments of a teaching experience’ (Merickel, 1998).
