SUPPORTING STUDENTS WITH ESL BACKGROUNDS

Classroom strategies to support learning for ESL students
http://suite101.com/article/supporting-esl-students-in-inclusive-classrooms-a137454
The following resource is a website designed to assist teachers in developing strategies to employ within the classroom to support students who come to the classroom with an ESL background. The website details ways that teachers can broaden the modes of delivery to support the understanding of students who are of an ESL background.

Department of Education and Communities: ESL Guidelines for Schools
The ESL 'Guidelines for Schools' document supports and aims to develop a whole school understanding about how to improve learning outcomes and promote competence for ESL students, through the curriculum to a level where they can fully participate in schooling and independantly persue further education and training (NSW DET, 2004).

Providing visual resources as a way of offering communication support
The following item is a communication fan which is designed to support ESL students in the classroom to break communication barriers. Although these resources are of great benefit to working towards communicating verbally, it is important that teachers and students do not come reliant on these resources as a sole means for communication as ESL students must also be supported to begin to communicate verbally as well as non-verbally.
